Open AI Surges Into Financial Services

AI Is Quickly Becoming Part Of Core Banking Workflows.

As intelligence moves higher up the technology stack, banks face a more fundamental question: can they trust the operational data and infrastructure underneath it? Artificial intelligence has taken another significant step into financial services. On September 2026 OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Financial Services, a specialist offering initially focused on investment banking and equity research.

Open-A-In-Banking-Blog

Developed through design partnerships with Morgan Stanley and Evercore, the platform combines OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model with financial data and workflows. It is designed to help financial professionals conduct research, build financial models and create customised client materials.  The significance isn't simply that another AI product has entered banking. It's where AI is heading. AI is rapidly moving beyond experimentation and towards the everyday workflows of highly regulated organisations. And that raises an important question.

What Happens When Sophisticated AI Meets Complicated Operational Reality?

Banks don't operate on clean sheets of technology. Their estates have evolved over decades. They typically contain combinations of legacy infrastructure, private cloud, public cloud, physical servers, virtual machines, networks, applications, databases, SaaS platforms, discovery tools, monitoring systems, CMDBs and third-party services. Different platforms often hold different versions of the same operational reality.

Assets change, applications move, infrastructure appears and disappears, relationships change, data becomes stale, essentially information that was correct yesterday may no longer be correct today. That's manageable when somebody is producing a spreadsheet. It becomes considerably more important when AI increasingly helps people analyse information, make decisions and eventually initiate actions.

AI Is Only As Useful As The Context Around It.

OpenAI itself makes an interesting point in its announcement:

“Data is the foundation of all financial analysis.”

It's a statement about financial data, but there's an equally important lesson for enterprise technology.

Operational data is the foundation of intelligent IT operations.

Ask an AI system:

Which infrastructure supports this critical banking service?

The answer depends on the underlying information.

Which servers?

Which databases?

Which cloud resources?

Which applications?

Which dependencies?

Which owners?

Which environments?

Which assets have recently changed?

If that operational data is incomplete, duplicated, stale or contradictory, adding AI doesn't magically make it trustworthy.

It simply allows the organisation to interrogate questionable information much faster.

The Problem Isn't Discovery. It's Trust.

Most large financial institutions already have discovery technologies. They also have CMDBs, asset-management platforms, monitoring tools, cloud-management platforms and other operational systems. The problem is rarely a complete absence of data. The problem is determining which data should be trusted. Two tools may identify the same device differently. A CMDB may contain an asset that hasn't been discovered for months. A new subnet might exist without being included in the organisation's current discovery scope. An application may have infrastructure relationships that are incomplete or outdated. A server may exist in one operational system but not another. That's why visibility alone isn't enough. Financial institutions increasingly need the ability to discover, reconcile, validate and contextualise operational data continuously.

From AI readiness To Operational Trust.

The AI conversation needs to mature. For the past few years, much of the debate around enterprise AI readiness has concentrated on models, skills, governance and business data. Those things matter. But organisations also need to consider the operational foundations supporting AI-enabled businesses.

This isn't theoretical. TekWurx worked with an international bank facing a complex regulatory challenge under the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA). The organisation needed to maintain a complete, accurate and continuously updated map of its IT environment, including applications, infrastructure, dependencies, suppliers and data flows.

Using uControl, TekWurx modelled 633 service applications and 1,500 application instances, incorporating discovered and non-discovered infrastructure and capturing application relationships and SME review. The project delivered the required implementation within five days.

While the project isn’t specifically about AI it demonstrates something that becomes increasingly important because of AI. Before an organisation can confidently automate decisions around its technology estate, it needs a reliable representation of that estate.

The CMDB Becomes Even More Important In The AI Era.

There's a temptation to think AI will eventually make technologies such as the CMDB irrelevant. The opposite is more likely. AI increases the value of trusted context. An AI assistant capable of querying operational information becomes much more valuable when the underlying data is reconciled, current and connected to business services.

Imagine asking:

Which Windows servers supporting critical applications haven't been seen in the last 30 days?

Which business-critical applications contain infrastructure that isn't currently being discovered?

What changed in the infrastructure supporting this payment service?

Which assets are approaching end of life?

Where do multiple discovery sources disagree?

Those are potentially powerful questions.

But the quality of the answers depends on the quality of the underlying operational data.

AI Changes The Cost Of Bad Data.

There is another consequence financial institutions should consider. Historically, poor operational data created friction. People spent hours reconciling spreadsheets. Engineers checked multiple platforms. Teams investigated discrepancies. Reports required manual validation. AI and automation potentially change that equation. Machines can act much faster than people. Which means inaccurate operational context can potentially be propagated much faster too. The objective therefore shouldn't simply be:

“How do we introduce more AI into IT operations?”

A better starting question may be:

“Can AI trust the operational data we're giving it?”

Building A Trusted Operational Foundation For AI

uControl brings together operational information from across the technology estate, helping organisations move from fragmented data towards a trusted operational view.

uControl Insight provides visibility across IT, OT, IoT and cloud environments, bringing discovered assets and their context into a unified inventory. Its capabilities include agentless and agent-based discovery, cloud and virtualisation discovery, passive network-flow discovery and identification of infrastructure that conventional scanning can miss.

uControl Core goes further by helping organisations reconcile operational data, improve data quality, model services and understand the relationships between technology and the business services it supports.

The objective isn't to replace the systems organisations already rely upon.

It's to make the information flowing between them more visible, trustworthy, traceable and controllable.

AI In Banking Needs More Than Intelligence

AI will increasingly become part of the tools financial institutions use to research, analyse, operate and make decisions. OpenAI has already built role-based access, encryption and audit-log capabilities into its financial-services offering, an indication of how important governance becomes as AI enters regulated workflows.

Governance at the AI layer is only part of the picture. Financial institutions also need confidence in the operational environment beneath it. Even the most advanced AI in the world still needs something trustworthy to reason from.
