uControlSoftware Asset Management (SAM)
Software Asset Management (SAM) reconciles what software is deployed across your estate against what you are licensed for — so you can see where you’re over- or under-licensed, stay compliant, and reclaim licences you’re paying for but not using.
How SAM works
Recognition — raw discovered software names are mapped to canonical software titles using recognition rules. Manage these under SAM → Recognition & Catalog.
Entitlements — record the licences you own (vendor, contract, quantity, metric) under SAM → Entitlements.
Reconciliation — run a reconciliation to compute the Effective Licence Position (licences owned minus deployments) per title: surplus, shortfall or compliant.
Compliance & renewals — review over/under-licensed positions and entitlements expiring soon. You can acknowledge or suppress individual compliance issues, so known or accepted positions drop off the active list and you’re left with what still needs attention.
Recognition catalogue
Under SAM → Recognition & Catalog you curate the catalogue that turns messy discovered software into clean titles: manage publishers, titles and the recognition rules that match raw names to them. Unrecognised software is queued for review — for each entry you either Map it to a catalogue title (creating or reusing a rule so future installs match automatically) or Ignore it (for drivers, updates and other noise you don’t want to licence-track).
Vendor packs
uControl Insight ships curated vendor packs for Microsoft, Adobe and Oracle Java — bundles of publishers, titles and recognition rules for those vendors’ common products, so you don’t have to build recognition from scratch. Enable a pack from SAM → Recognition & Catalog; its rules are applied to your inventory and its titles appear in the catalogue, ready for entitlements and reconciliation.
Usage-driven licence reclaim
On SAM → Optimization, the Reclaimable Licences view shows licensed software that is installed but hasn’t been launched within the unused window (90 days by default), using the endpoint agent’s usage telemetry. Each candidate is graded by confidence:
High — the device has the agent reporting usage and this software hasn’t been launched. A confirmed reclaim.
Low — the software is installed but there’s no usage data (no agent on that device). Worth reviewing; deploy the agent to confirm.
Software that is being used is never flagged. The result: a clear list of licences you can reclaim to cut cost.
SAM REST API
SAM also exposes a REST API so you can integrate reconciliation with your own reporting or CMDB. Endpoints cover the catalogue, entitlements, software inventory and reconciliation results, returning the same data the SAM screens show.
