Administrator Guide

Last updated 2026-05-27

This page is the entry point for administering uControl Insight. Day-to-day configuration is done through the in-app Settings UI; this page links to detailed configuration guides per feature.

First-time setup checklist

  1. Install uControl Insight per the Installation — On-Premises or Installation — Cloud Deployment guide.
  2. Log in with the default administrator account, change the password.
  3. Configure authentication (LDAP / SAML / OIDC) on the Settings → Authentication tab — see the Authentication page.
  4. Add a discovery target and run an initial scan — see the Discovery Setup Guides.
  5. (Optional) Enable AI capabilities — see the AI Features page.
  6. (Optional) Point flow exporters at uControl — see Network Flow Monitoring.
  7. (Optional) Set up Microsoft Teams notifications — see Microsoft Teams Integration.
  8. Tune the asset-aging thresholds for your environment — see Asset Aging & Lifecycle.

Where configuration lives

Most configuration has now moved into the in-app Settings page (/settings, admin only). See Settings — Configuration UI for an overview of the tabs, what each one covers, what hot-reloads vs needs a restart, and how secrets are protected.

Other admin areas

  • Sidebar → Users — create local users, assign roles.
  • Sidebar → Roles — review the available role set.
  • Sidebar → Workers — manage remote discovery workers.
  • Sidebar → Integration Keys — generate API keys for external integrations.
  • Sidebar → Credentials — manage SSH/SNMP/vCenter/… credentials used by discovery.
  • Sidebar → Audit Log — review who did what.

Schema migrations

Flyway migration V056 (May 2026) adds an app_users.theme_preference VARCHAR(8) column to store each user’s UI theme choice. No admin action required — the column defaults to NULL, which means the UI falls back to the user’s OS / browser preference until they pick one in the in-app Profile → Appearance card or via the sidebar ☾ / ☀ toggle.
